Airdrie was chosen as the host of the 2014 Alberta Summer Games, attracting thousands of Albertans to compete in a range of sports and athletics. Events were held at Genesis Place, a permanent recreational centre enjoyed by Airdrie residents.
Genesis Place is a first-class athletic facility with multiple pools, a water slide, several indoor fields, a fitness centre, and a gymnasium. A variety of programs, teams, and events are hosted throughout the year to promote fitness and overall well-being. Genesis Place also offers affordable hourly childcare services that give busy parents the freedom to exercise and relax.
Skating and hockey enthusiasts can take advantage of the Ron Ebbesen and Plainsmen Arenas, while new and experienced curlers can take turns throwing rocks down the ice at the Airdrie Curling Club. Several cross-country skiing and snowshoeing groups meet in the winter months to take advantage of Airdrie’s beautiful terrain. The closest downhill skiing and snowboarding can be found in Calgary at Canada Olympic Park or in Nakiska, with backcountry cat skiing at Fortress Mountain.
Other favorite activities in Airdrie include golfing at Woodside Golf & Country Club, brewery tours, hiking, walking, painting, and mountain biking. There are other regular entertainment opportunities including Nose Creek Park, the Bert Church Theatre, Airdrie public library, and annual festivals and events.
